What started as a heartfelt project to impress his grandparents has turned Marc Edwards into a sought-after digital storyteller in the Scottish Borders.
Using cutting-edge AI software, Marc transformed vintage photographs of Jedburgh into moving video montages—breathing life into street scenes dating back to the 1800s. His first audience: his grandparents, George and Isobel Somerville.
“I was picturing their reaction if I could make this work,” said Marc. “When I put the photos through the software, the results were mind-blowing.”
Marc’s videos quickly went viral after being shared online, earning thousands of views and community praise. Inspired by the response, he expanded the project to include other Borders towns such as Kelso and Galashiels.
Now, his AI-generated films are being used in schools’ history lessons and featured at older people’s events, including Galashiels’ OPAL (Older People Active Lives) gatherings. Local pensioners like Monica and Ann were deeply moved, recalling memories triggered by the vivid recreations.
“I remember being sent to meet my dad off the train after Dunkirk,” Monica said tearfully after watching the old Galashiels station come to life on screen.
Marc, a marketing officer by profession, is now fielding daily requests from communities and sports clubs to recreate their local history.
“Teachers tell me the videos help children understand our heritage. I’ll definitely keep making them. AI is incredible, and who knows what will be possible in a year?”
Despite all the accolades, Marc says his proudest fans remain his grandparents. “We were amazed,” said George. “I don’t know how it all moves, but I love watching it. It’s like seeing the past come alive.”
